Oh, Buddy

Buddy Buddy Handsomeface. I love you. But limping around my apartment for no reason / scaring the hell out of me yesterday was not cool. I rushed Buddy to the vet and $75 later (huge sigh of relief as I was expecting to spend hundreds), the pup found himself on anti-inflammatory meds and is not allowed to play or go on walks for a week. My regular vet will be making a house call Thursday with a refill on his allergy medicine. Seems he has a skin allergy, too.

He really is the PERFECT dog minus his leg problems which will likely continue to haunt us in the years to come. I am a worrier so I think about this all the time. Buddy had grade 4 patella luxation which was repaired in one of his legs, but the other back leg has some degree of it so he may or may not need another surgery at some point. But I love my little pup and I wouldn't trade him for nothin'. You can read his full story here.

The 4,726th time I've shared this photo. I can't help myself.

Do you have a dog or plans to get one soon? Tell me about your pup. Name, age, breed? Is your dog a rescue like Buddy?

PS. I'm taking part in Jess Constable's Design Your Life series Makeunder My Life today.

  1. I'm glad to hear Buddy is ok. My Lola, Buddy's lady in DC, hasn't had any problems yet, but I do hear that their legs tend to have issues later in life. We got Lola little steps and placed them around the apartment so she doesn't have to jump when getting on the couch or anywhere she wants to go. Not great for decoration around the apartment but great for her little legs. Give Buddy a big hug from us here in DC.

  3. Our little chihuahua Chicklet is also a rescue pup and we love her to pieces! The vet tells us she has bad legs, but no problems yet and hopefully none to come in the future.

  4. Poor little buddy! At least he has a caring mommy who wouldn't bother to rush him to the vet and make sure he is fine and healthy!

My vet said to me the other day that I shouldn't be frightened every time my pups don't want to eat. I immediately think they're sick and rush them to the vet. haha

He is such a gorgeous little guy and I love that pic of him in his Christmas hat! Use it again and again!

  5. I have always loved your pics of sweet little Buddy, but now that I know he's a rescue, I love them even more! I would do anything for a pup, but have surrounded myself with a roommate and bf who don't want a doggie in their life. *sigh*

  7. Glad to hear that Buddy is okay! Yes, I have a pup too. His name is KOSPI. He is seven years young. He is a Jack Russell, truly. So full of energy. I love him so much. And I'm the same way with the pictures, I have them all over my Facebook and apartment.

  8. Who is this house call vet you speak of? I need a great Chicago vet for my recently adopted Howard.

  9. My cousin has a dog that looks just like this and his name is Pod. He can be kind of vicious though. He will attack if anyone tries to hug my cousin. I guess he thinks that she is being attacked so he is protecting her...

  11. Buddy is so cute!
I have a black toy poddle named Maximus (Max) Crowe. We adopted him for a friend's cousin who couldn't keep him any longer. he's the best dog (my family and I are on our fifth black toy poddle but he's the first male!) and he has slowly become over the years, my parents dog and not mine any more. :o( but that's ok. when I move out, I'll still dog sit him and adopt a new black toy poddle puppy when the time comes (hopefully from a shelter.)

  12. Buddy is so clean and shiny! My junkyard dog never is as well groomed as Mr. B. Baxter Clyde is our ten year old basset and I love him to pieces, but he is definitely a stinky, smelly hound dog! :D

  14. Ahh I've had dogs on the brain for the past two weeks - I've always wanted to get a shih tzu, but I would feel awful buying a puppy vs adopting one that needs a home...so I guess I'm biding my time until I find one! (They're perfect for NYC apartments -small enough and they don't shed, which is the best thing ever. Plus I love my friend's shih tzu - such a sweetie!)

  16. I am glad he is ok!

We recently just rescued a 2 year old Chihuahua. She came from an abusive home so is still scared, but she is doing better.

  20. So glad to hear Buddy is OK. As a mom of 2 boxers (one breeder dog, one rescue), I know how nerve-wracking it can be when your furbabies aren't themselves. I'm on the board of an animal rescue (secondhandmutts.org), and I'm always trying to encourage people to rescue instead of "buy". Having rescued (our 2nd boxer), I don't think I could ever go back to "buying" one.

  21. Aw! I hope he feels better soon! I know when I got my cat she was a rescue and had a lot of issues and everyone thought I was crazy to spend so much money on here! Pets really are like family though! As for a pup, I don't have one yet but I'm looking to get one soon! :)

  22. Buddy is SO handsome!! I do have a pup that I adore. Molly, a King Charles Cavalier, who's not quite 2 years old. She is the sweetest thing in the world and would follow me anywhere. She makes delightful company and is the "girl" in my life as I have two young sons. I love that she doesn't mind me "dressing" her up!

The patella issue is one Cavaliers have to contend with as well, so I sympathize with Buddy's limping. Hope he's feeling better soon.

  23. Chicago is one of the best cities for dogs! We have two larger rescue pooches and we're able to take them almost everywhere.

  24. aw poor buddy! he really is such a strong dog & you are a great owner :) you both are troopers and i know whatever happens, he'll be ok. and he's kist the cutest. that little face kills me!

i have 2 dogs [a pitbull & a boston terrier, both 3 years old. my babies!!] and though both of them are healthy dogs, i know how it is to empathize with dogs. they really are the greatest friends a person could have. :)

and I LOVED your design your life series over on makeunder my life! for a few years ive been contemplating moving to chicago with my husband b/c of the fear in me - the fear of leaving my family and friends, starting new, not knowing if we will make any new friends out there and now our animals. i ADMIRE you so much for doing what you wanted and putting yourself in a more self-gratifying place. i hope to do the same... and hope to one day finally make my way to chicago! and reading your blog posts about chicago doesn't help! lol but i hope if i do, it'll be as great as the life you've created for yourself there.

such a long comment, sorry! :) feel better buddy!!!

  25. So glad your little Buddy is OK! My Chi-Weni, Noah, is also a rescue pup with luxating patellas on both his hind legs. I live in a 3 story townhome and my poor baby goes down the stairs on 1 leg!! OMG, everytime he limps I freak out. We are just about to celebrate 6 years together (next week!). This is the year I spring for the knee surgery. Expensive $$$ but so worth it in my book. XOXO to Buddy, - K

  26. He melts my heart! I hope he feels better soon - being cooped up at home is never fun for a pup! Bailey is our girl - she's a two year old cockapoo we adopted from a family in the suburbs who couldn't take care of her anymore. I think my fiance and I talk about her more than ourselves!

  27. I want a dog SO. BAD. Thankfully, one of the perks of staying with my aunt right now is that I live with three — an English bulldog, a beagle, and a golden retriever. I'm probably going to dognap the beagle when I move out (don't tell my aunt).

  28. I totally and completely understand. Last year our puppy, Rocky, was so excited to see my sister that he ran down the stairs at lightening speed. On the landing, instead of running to her (and us) he sat down and then started to limp. Well, you would think someone had a heart attack. My sisters, my dad and I all took him to the emergency vet right then and there at midnight. It was a relief when he just had a sprain. I totally understand your love of your pet. I am so happy Buddy is ok. As a natural worrier also I get you. I love when you talk about this cute little guy.

  30. I have a 3 year old Miniature Schnauzer named Beau. He is my little dog child and is as spoiled as they come. He isn't a rescue, but I did adopt him when he was a little over a year old from a couple who had taken very good care of him but just couldn't care for him anymore because of their new baby. He is the sweetest thing and loves meeting new dogs, since he is an only dog child haha!

  31. Buddy is ADORABLE. OMG, I'd have shared that last pic 4,726 times too, LOL!

My Lola is a poodle-bichon mix and she is around 7 years old. I rescued her when she was about a year old from Hopalong Animal Rescue. Her original name was Fizzywig but that was a mouthful for the tiny pup that she was. So I renamed her Lola after the British TV show "Charlie and Lola." She fits her namesake to a tee!

  33. I LOVE the pics of Buddy! What a cutie pie! I hope he gets better soon and enjoys the extra R&R. :)

I adopted two rescue chihuahuas (Tate Dogovan and FurFur,) three months ago, and just like you, I find myself worrying about those little critters all the time! It makes me wonder how people let their children out of their sight.

I wouldn't trade them for the world...I love that dogs are happy to see you no matter what sort of day you've had, how you look, smell, or feel. That's true love!

  34. Oh poor Buddy! Our old Rottie had two knee recos, we swore by glucosamine powder supplements in his food, great for their joints so perhaps something to consider for the little guy :)

  36. Hi Danielle!

Poor Buddy! Glad to hear he is going to be okay though :) My little Coco Bean always had super bad itchy skin allergies during certain seasons until we changed her to a grain-free/ gluten-free food (which prevents inflammation) and added in probiotics and a little bit of flaxseed oil everyday. It worked wonders! Her allergies are completely gone now, her coat looks glamorous, and she seems much happier. I recommend it to all my friends who have pups with allergies - its the best natural remedy. Here are the links incase you want Buddy to give it a try. I hope he heals and feels better soon. : )

  37. Our doggie, Stevie, who is 7 months old now, just got spayed yesterday. She is making us want to cry non-stop with her pain! She vomited on the couch last night while we were watching The Artist and it broke my heart. Imagining her on the operating table bothered me so much at work yesterday. I'm glad it's over with and that she'll heal quickly - but not quickly enough for me!

Buddy is too cute - glad he is ok!

  38. Hiii!
I think I already told you about my beautiful ladies. Nela is 9 years old and my father found her wandering in the street (although I think she escaped from her former home). She is the most beautiful dog I've ever seen because she is soooo special. I had Lisa when she came. She was my baby (and will always be). In a week it will be 4 years since she passed away (that was the hardest loss I experienced in my whole life). A year ago we decided Nela needed company so we visited 3 rescue homes until we found Lilly. She is the PERFECT dog for all of us. Nela accepted her really well (she doesn't do this with any other dog) and she is my "bomboncito" (little sweet). There could not be a better dog in the world for our home! She is 5 now and happy-happy (she's always been so!).
If you want to know them, check the right column in my blog.
It is so nice to see how much you love your dog!!!

  40. Glad to hear Buddyis doing alright! Poor guy! I love that pic of him in the Santa hat..always a fav.

My little doxie chihuahua mix, Zander, is 10 months old. We got him at 8 weeks from a local Doxie rescue. His mom was incredibly malnourished and preggo when she arrived at the rescue...they couldn't even tell how far along she was! Three days later she gave birth to four healthy pups! He is the absolute best thing and makes our days so much better!

  41. Want a dog BADLY, but am waiting until I buy a house/condo in the city before getting one. It only makes sense to wait to get a dog since my Mr. and I will be buying in the next 12 months. We just couldn't bear to pay pet deposits or repair fees if something get screwed up.

We regularly donate to Paws Chicago and even made them one of the beneficiaries of our wedding (in lieu of gifts, people could give to Paws and we did supply drives at our showers!). I think we'll end up getting our friend there :)

  42. I love the photos of Buddy. He's just too cute. Hope he feels better!

I have a 10 month old yorkie, Pacino who makes me laugh everyday. My boyfriend wasn't keen on getting a dog, but he's fallen in love with him.
