Birthday gifts. I love picking out the perfect card & doing something sweet for a friend. It's the thought that counts.

I have a few Qs for you.
Do you exchange birthday gifts with your friends?
Do you discuss whether or not you will exchange gifts in advance?
Favorite way[s] to do something thoughtful without spending a lot of money?

What are your thoughts on this one? Would love to know what you think!

  1. I love giving gifts! I usually don't say anything in advance. If I believe that I care for that person and want to give him or her a git, I will definitely do it, regardless if they give one to me in return. However, if there is a person who has voiced that they do not like receiving gifts because they cannot give back and feel inferior for this, then I know just to give a nice card or something really small anyway. I just love giving them, but it can be a fine line of when its appropriate to give. I never want to make the other person feel bad.

  2. This is such a great topic. I usually give my closest friends presents for their birthdays and for all my other friends, a card and a small gift is always what I give. Nothing too big, a bracelet I found at a market, a fun nail polish, a bag of their favorite candy, etc, these are all small gifts, but usually do the trick. I really never expect anything in return (as most people don't know my birthday, it's kind of a secret).

  3. I think it is a great idea to give birthday gifts. It makes the person's day. Especially if they don't live near family. It doesn't need to be fancy. Homemade or something from etsy . Something little, a cool nail polish color, new necklace, or a manicure gift card. Or just meeting for wine! Everyone loves to get an unexpected little gift:)

  4. First off love that image! Yeah we do exchange birthday gifts, It is always fun but it has changed over the years! I am always one to do thoughtful over monetary, for HS graduation I gave my best friend a stool/bin that was full of items she was always borrowing from me because we were no longer going to be in the same state!

  6. my friends and i always always exchange little gifts for birthdays - nothing huge, just a thoughtful something. for christmas my italian girls (theres 5 of us) all get each other the same thing: a lipstick, nail polish, stylish keychain, etc.

  7. I think it's important to always give something, even if it's just a card with a lovely handwritten note.

My two favorite gifts are books and iPhoto creations. A book is something you have to know the person to give, which automatically makes it special. iPhoto has this feature where you can make photobooks or calendars for an extremely reasonable price. I just gave one to a friend after our Europe trip and she loved it (and it cost me $9.95).

  10. My friends don't really do birthday gifts. I usually take a friend to dinner or brunch and treat (which I guess sort of counts) and get a card. Sometimes flowers, a book or something small but that's not the norm. For the holidays we usually do a secret santa kind of thing.

  11. i love gift giving--so fun to think of something thoughtful. i always give my close friends something for their birthdays--and christmas--even if it isn't always reciprocated--but i just want to them to know how much they mean to me~

  12. I have a select few friends that I still exchange gifts with. I think it's a nice gesture! A nice card is always a sweet gesture too! :)

  13. There are only a select few of my gf's from back home that I exchange gifts with. Other than that it is usually a phone call, a card, or treating them to a meal of some sort.

  14. I like to make my friends presents... that way it's thoughtful but no one feels like you are spending too much money on them, etc. A DIY'd necklace or pair of earrings in colors that they love.. thoughtful & fun!

  15. I do with some friends. We don't usually discuss it. I am all about the Packaging even if I'm just giving a gift card.

  16. I love everyone's birthday! My friends usually do dinner and cake but sometimes my close friends throw gifts in the mix! Lately I have been doing mani or pedi gift certificates- I mean, wouldn't we all want that as a gift!

  18. Yes, I exchanged gifts with my friends on their birthday but we are trying to stop exchanging gifts on Christmas.

Birthdays are a given but I sometimes discuss exchanging Christmas gifts. Last year, a blogger asked me if I wanted to exchange Christmas gifts with her and I agreed. I got a really nice gift.

I'm so uninspired these days so friends get gift cards from me. But since I started taking sewing classes, friends will be getting handmade birthday or Christmas gifts this year and next.

  19. At this point I only still exchange gifts with a small group of friends. There's an unwritten rule that you don't spend too much. It's just nice getting a special package in the mail during your birthday!

  20. I exchange gifts with 3 friends for birthdays and Christmas. Now that 2 of them have kids we just buy for the kids then take each other out for dinner when we need a girls night.
