Girls who inspire: Alaina of Live Creating Yourself

Wednesday, April 20, 2011

This week, I am featuring fellow Chicago blogger & friend Alaina of Live Creating Yourself. Alaina is just as sweet as you would imagine her to be. She has the cutest Chicago apartment I have ever seen, two adorable pups & a great little etsy shop. She also won't skip a Christmas song on her shuffle in April. So really...what's not to love?

name & age:
alaina kacamarski, 25

west suburbs of Chicago

current home:
Chicago, IL

 Alaina's office.
Believe it or not -- it's even better in person!

meaning behind my blog name:
I was 23 when I started my blog and I was (still am) unsure what I wanted to do with my life... But every day, I find inspiration in the quote: "Life isn't about finding yourself; life's about creating yourself." So that's what my blog is. A compilation of all the things I love and industries I'd love to work in, including interior design, fashion, photography, art, graphic design, travel, entertaining, and most importantly, it keeps me writing every day.

current job:
Day Job: graphic designer and communications associate for an NPO After-hours Job: freelance graphic designer and blogger

dream job: Here we go:
travel writer, magazine editor, screenwriter, editorial stylist, graphic designer (already do this!), novelist, photographer, professor, neurologist, Tina Fey's assistant and best friend... should I keep going?

if i could travel anywhere:
Oh geez... where would I not go? On my very long list of places I want to visit are South Africa, India, Tibet, New Zealand, Machu Picchu, Buenos Aires, Sweden, St. Petersburg, Amsterdam, the French Riviera (I am aware I listed both cities, countries, and regions). I guess for the sake of reality, if I could go anything within the next year, I'd spend ten days in Europe, visiting two cities. Either London and Paris, Barcelona and Rome, or Amsterdam and Edinburgh. Those are the trips that float through my daydreams on a daily basis.

something unique about me:
I was on Wheel of Fortune. Pat Sajak is quite short and very orange in person.

i like to:
I like to sing, and I watch way too many movies. I practically live at my computer, blogging, searching for inspiring websites, and Pinning my favorite photos. I've also started learning French with Rosetta Stone, which is officially my new favorite way to pass the time.

i watch:
My favorite movies are those by Nora Ephron, Nancy Meyers, or anything based on a Jane Austen novel. As for TV, my must-see's are The Good Wife, Modern Family, Vampire Diaries, and NBC Thursday night. I wish Liz Lemon was real so we could be best friends. Wow. Two Tina Fey references in one post. I've got to work on that...

listening to:
Mumford and Sons, Damien Rice, Joe Purdy - I like boys with guitars.

crushing on:
Ed Helms - I think he's adorable. He sings, plays the piano, he's hilarious, and rumor has it he's one of the nicest guys in the biz. I'll take nice over abs any day of the week.

5 things that inspire me:
Blogs, walks around the city, travel, music, and at the risk of sounding like a complete cheeseball, the ocean.

favorite nail polish:
My new obsession is OPI's Pinking Of You. Light, pretty, and super girly.

favorite perfume:
Burberry Brit

what advice would you have for anyone decorating their place on a budget?
1. You cannot be lazy about it. Searching for the good deal, making over ugly, old furniture, and visiting smelly thrift stores are all part of the process.

2. Craigslist, Ikea, and thrift stores are your best friends. You can find really great stuff for super cheap by using these resources. Thanks to Craigslist, I paid $300 for a barely used West Elm couch and rug that originally cost over $1000. The good stuff is out there, but you have to look regularly and frequently.

what are some of your favorite online shops?
Nothing exciting... I don't really like shopping online because I hate paying for shipping and you never know if something will fit right. But if I do, odds are the package is coming from one of these stores: for clothes: Gilt, J.Crew, Shopbop, and Bluefly. for home: Gilt, Anthropologie, West Elm - I almost exclusively buy items on sale.
