An update. Advice needed.

Thank you all for your comments. It's really nice to know that you're all on my side. I am definitely way out of my element.

Anyway, here is the deal. She is willing to give me the spare key. The elevator key is electronic so she definitely cannot copy that one and the apartment key says "duplication prohibited." I told her I'd pay her on a weekly basis, and as long as things are ok each week, that I'd keep staying.

I also told her that she cannot come in to the unit while I am here, while Dexter is here, or while my things are here. I was very nice about it and explained it wasn't personal but that if all of this followed her I couldn't handle it. I need to know that we are both safe and that nothing else will go missing. She says that these "spirits" mess with her so I figure if she doesn't come over I'll be ok?! Ugh.

What do you think? Should I just stay here?

I found a place for $300 more without a washer/dryer in the unit and also found a hotel where I could afford to do 2 weeks, but that sounds like a horrible option.

My mom thinks I should just stay in this unit. I'd love your advice. Help!

  1. I say keep looking for a new place, but stay until you find something that would actually work for you, especially if she follows the new rules

  2. I'd just wonder if you can be sure she doesn't have another spare key besides the one she's agreed to give you. Also, what happens if she goes to the property management and says she's lost her keys? They're bound to either give her a copy or even change the locks. I know that the latter is how the management of a place I used to live handled things. I'd be wary, but I'd stay so long as the sublet is on the up and up (management is aware of it, blah, blah, etc.).

    Good luck!

  3. Oh man oh man oh man. Keep looking at apartments dear. Look on apts.com, look on craigslist, look everywhere. I don't blame you for wanting to stay, but I also don't blame you for wanting to leave. I feel like you'd have a huge weight lifted of your shoulders (or at least I would) if you left. Do you have another friend in the city you could stay with? What area of the city are you looking in? Feel free to email me if you need more advice! somewhereinchicago dot gmail dot com.

  4. I'd keep looking. Stay put on a week to week basis until you find something. I think that I would spend the extra 300 for a new place...hopefully there would be laundry on the premises? This sucks, but what a story to tell! :) The girl sounds crazy and I don't think that you would ever feel "safe" regardless of the measures you are taking. All I can really say is go with your gut! Sorry you have to deal with this!

  5. Spirits? She sounds really kooky. I'd get out if you can find another place. You want to feel "safe" in your "own" apartment. Would you be able to talk to the management and let them know that you're subletting the apt and that she's not to get another key?

And I can't believe SHE stole your sweatshirt!!!! What the hell would a spirit do with a Lulu hoodie.

  6. This all sounds so BIZARRE! I would leave just because I'd be afraid of her. She sounds unstable in the extreme. I'd keep looking, but stay where you are until you find something else. Egads!

  7. Ok, I don't want to add to your worries...but I was thinking the same thing that Leila mentioned above. What if she has a spare key she hasn't told you about - or, can she request another? (I mean, this chick seems a little odd to me...maybe she could ask the "spirits" to provide her a key? LOL). Keep looking, I say. But PRAY about it! {I'll be praying for you too} (:
